Washington, D.C. -- The Present
Fifty years old, newly divorced, and well-off, Anne Johnson is living it up. But she's more than a bit confused when a voice in her head tells her that there will be a murder committed in her apartment building in thirty days and that she must prevent it! What's a woman to do? First of all, she gets an ally -- the wise-cracking building housekeeper, Mary. Then Anne begins her own in-house investigation by
having a party for all of the tenants. As she prepares for the gala, she starts snooping around the complex and meets some rather interesting individuals.
The central meeting area, it seems, is the building's laundry room --
a maze of washers, driers, folding tables, and a neat little library where people can find a good read and meet others. But Anne's encounter with the mysterious Lucas Bower, a hulking German who claims to be a night watchman, calls from someone breathing heavily into the phone, and the death of a tenant -- a former senator -- under very strange circumstance, have Anne just a bit concerned about the deadline from the voice in her head. How do all of these episodes connect? Or do they?
My Very Own Murder is funny, irreverent, and sexy. Readers will enjoy Anne's "coming out", from her snazzy haircut to her lusty thoughts, but more important, they'll have great fun trying to figure out what she'll do to prevent a murder. Sidekick Mary is a hoot, and the two women make a great team as they sip martinis and plot their next move, all the while sharing thoughts on lovers, cooking, and family. Excellent writing and witty dialogue team with some terrific characters in this very enjoyable book.
An entertaining story and a darned good mystery make My Very Own Murder a quick, and quirky, read.
